When you have pets you always have your own Greek Chorus passing judgment on your actions. My dog Cali, for instance, begins barking at me when I stay up beyond my usual bed time. We can pretend with other people, perhaps even make our own conscience give us a pass, but our own pets know us too well.
Corgis are handsome dogs.
As the lead staff functionary for two cats whose quarters I am permitted to share, I can attest to this. Meal times are when they say so, regardless of external considerations such as my still being asleep at oh-dark-thirty. Other examples abound.
Cats tend to prefer routines. Ours like to be fed every 12 hours. One of the two begins issuing reminders about 90 minutes beforehand. One of the two also issues reminders after finishing his morning meal that he expects an addendum for himself and his brother.
I get up at 4:00 AM. I let the dog out and I then feed Mr. Chance, the cat we inherited from my Mother in Law, what I call his Kittygogurt which comes in pressable tubes, I then busy myself at the computer for 45 minutes. Longer then that and Mr. Chance meows at me since he knows when I go downstairs to shower he will get the wet food he loves.
Sarah follows me out to the master bathroom shower stall. She places her order… meow x3…
and boom. I’m ok to resume my morning tasks.
She’s 14 and her eyesight is starting to fail her.
She adopted me at the animal rescue 13 years ago. Once the attendant opened up her cage she jumped up onto my right shoulder. WoW. A strange occurrence for a cat to be so daring.
My wife said that she was very desperate.
🙂
Couldn’t risk having another human pass her by and spending more time in that horrible cage is my guess. She’s been a loving friend in our lives.
Mr Spot at 16 was put to sleep DEC 8th the day before my birthday. I spent many nights sleeping in a kitchen chair with him on my lap to keep him warm. He still greeted any one who entered the kitchen, sunbathed on the porch on a nice day; still drank water, still used the box, but wouldn’t eat. Despite appetite stimulate cream in his ears. the vet and I knew It was time. Now Mommy his littermate and roommate goes out in the morning, callilng for him and searaching for him. She does the same thing at bedtime. She is eating better especially the morning stick of gravy for cats over 10 years. Every time I sit down Mommy is on my lap.
My husband said I was Hospice for Spot and now I am helping Mommy through Bereavement.
Today’s is my husband’s birthday. One of the cards I gave him has many cats on the front with the caption, “You’re probably thinking, A birthday card from a cat? Isn’t that kinda stange!” Next page ” Oh, and I suppose ”meowing’ back at me Isn’t?”
Pets are good for humans in so many ways and vice versa .When children are old enough having a pet instills responsibility and routine and is good companionship..
Peace be yours, hospice/bereavement specialist.
I agree with you CAM.
Pets are good for humans in so many ways and vice versa.
Amen.
I’m sorry for your loss.
We do grow so close to our pets.
Philip, thank you. Your Sarah sounds like an amazing cat. May you and your wife have many more enjoyable years with her.
