Imagine for a moment how Pope St. John Paul II, who had lived under communist oppression, would react if he’d heard such a deeply stupid statement— and from a Pope!
My maternal grandparents escaped Ukraine during Stalin’s reign, and I can only imagine their mix of anger, bafflement and nausea if they’d lived to hear a Pope say such garbage.

He revealed his Marxist sympathies very early on when the commie dictator in some South American banana republic gave him the blasphemous “hammer and sickle crucifix.” PF grinned like a kid on Christmas morning getting a new bike. I remember trying very hard to reconcile his behavior with what we have a right to expect from a pope, and came up empty. That was the last straw for my tenure as an RCIA catechist.
I equate non-ideological in high positions about the same way I feel about lukewarm water. We have it on good authority how the Almighty views that.
“new paths”? “Thus saith the Lord: stand ye on the ways, and see and ask for the old paths which is the good way, and walk ye in it: and ye shall find refreshment for your souls. And they said: we will not walk”. Jer 6:16-20. Is that anywhere in the Lectionary?
I prefer the dialogue between capitalism and Christianity. 700 years so far!

Anything further that I have to say should be said in the confines of a nuclear submarine where only my shipmates and God Almighty can hear me (and would understand).
Frank, this is precisely the time to STAY on as an RCIA catechist as I have, to make sure that enquirers and seekers get the REAL Catholic faith, otherwise they will be at risk of thinking Catholicism consists of nonsense like the pope’s statement above (and then likely rejecting the Church).
