Captain Newman MD (1962) is a riveting look at a psych ward at an Army Air Forces hospital in 1944. Gregory Peck is perfect in the title role, as he uses every method he can think of to aid the shattered men he is treating. Eddie Albert ( A real life war hero.), Angie Dickinson, Bobby Darin, Robert Duvall and Tony Curtis all give bravura performances. A mixture of comedy and drama, just like life, the movie unexpectedly ends with a Christmas party. The presence of Italian POWs underscores the imperfect attempt amidst the bleakness of war to bring good will to Men. A very good film, it is available on YouTube, free with ads.
