Lightfoot’s best songwriting was when he wrote about actual historical events. Besides the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, there was another shipwreck song he wrote about the cruise ship Yarmouth Castle, that caught fire and capsized e route from Miami to the Bahamas back in 1965. He never recorded that song in the studio. He recorded it live.

I saw the Edmund Fitzgerald pass through the Soo locks several years before the sinking. Sad day when it went down. I remember it well. And thanks to Gordon Lightfoot. may he RIP.
