No big deal. Weather balloons withcamera and transmitters go missing all the time, according to our Chinese neighbors. This lil’ plane… it’s nothing to worry about. Probably landed in Delaware somewhere.

….and yet they managed to locate a cowering Saddam hidden in a small dug-out spider hole under an unassuming palm tree in the middle of a remote and isolated Tikrit farm….ay yay yay.

The Navy has been having problems with the Littoral Combat Ship program.

We also crash nuclear submarines into the sea bottom – AFTER we already KNEW there were command performance problems and previous mishaps (crashes against the pier).

BTW, the USS Connecticut SSN-22 that crashed in October of 2021 is not expected to return to service until sometime in 2025.

As GregB points out, the littoral ship program is a “Whose idea was this exactly?” disaster. Meanwhile, the Chinese navy is churning out conventional destroyers and guided missile frigates regularly.

LCQ would know the answer to this better than I, but I understand according to retired Navy personnel, that of the 14 Ohio class submarines that we have, perhaps only 8 or 9 or so are actually at sea, because of the backlog of servicing and the equivalent of dry dock time due for many of them— even before the USS Connecticut fiasco.

If the Taiwan issue becomes a hot war, we would need all 14+ as well as our approximately 4 cruise missile submarines active and deployed to effectively counter the Chinese navy.

Fat chance.

So, what action in the 21st centurywould qualify as treason?
Asking for a friend’s country, not mine, of course.

@Steve Phoenix: not entirely accurate, but good enough:

Actual number of fast attack, cruise missile, and ballistic missile subs in port for maintenance is classified. I am guessing about 50 to 60%.

In any South China Sea conflict, current wargame estimates say (assuming China doesn’t launch nukes at the US west coast) we will win but at the cost of losing one to two nuclear powered aircraft carriers and 40% of the available submarine fleet put into combat. After the conflict we will be unable to act as the world’s policeman any longer. Ukraine and Russia, and Iran and the Middle East will be left to their own devices. And in any second conflict, the communist Chinese will be sure NOT to lose.

I’m not precisely understanding the angst here.
I have heard of an F-16–not a stealthy airplane–having been lost in a swamp after the pilot ejected; the plane was too low for radar to track. Given the F-35 IS a stealthy plane, it makes sense they’d have trouble finding it.
That sign strikes me as somebody’s idea of a wry joke mixed with a serious request. It’s a “keep your eyes open”, not a “OMG, we can’t find it” deal.
It seems to be the end of a training flight in South Carolina. So, not an operational fighting mission near North Korea.
What else would you call it if not a mishap?

Chinese Spy Balloons – Does anyone believe Gen Milley who recently said that judging from the wreckage removed from shallow waters, the equipment for spying was never turned on?

Geez what a relief! Not.
