Go here to read the story. Opus Dei, like many groups within the Church which emphasize obedience to the Pope, are learning how tricky that can be when the Pope of the hour is a very bad man.
PopeWatch: Opus Dei
Donald R. McClarey
Cradle Catholic. Active in the pro-life movement since 1973. Father of three, one in Heaven, and happily married for 41 years. Small town lawyer and amateur historian. Former president of the board of directors of the local crisis pregnancy center for a decade.
Maybe obedience to the pope is not the fundamental note of Catholicism that these groups imagine it to be. Maybe they need to re-think a few things, eh?
It’s tough what he has done to Opus Dei. I guess he is making sure the conservative side of the Church has limited power. Opus Dei and the traditionalists will just go about their business quietly- which I don’t think is a bad thing. I think this will strengthen the Church from the ground roots up. God and His Eternal Truth won’t be defeated.
Logically it does not make sense to obey what one pope says if he is opposition to all other popes and scripture and tradition. It’s like saying Obedience to God is obedience to the whims of a single man. God is not “surprised” by the election of Francis, but HE did not elect him. HIS is a permissive Providence yes, but what other false teachings might we be tempted to accept over this kind of bad logic.
Servile obedience is never enough for the brittle tyrant in charge. He likes his peons compromised and dumb, too.
All the better to herd them to his shiny new spirituality.
Never mind that it looks suspiciously like a planetary gulag with regular pride parades and self-denunciation sessions.
