“I think it is a great cheek of the Germans to try and teach the rest of the world anything about religion. They should be in perpetual sackcloth and ashes for all their enormities from Luther to Hitler.”
Evelyn Waugh, letter to Lady Diana Acton, March 15, 1963
Well sir. I’m regular Army. I don’t get into beefs between colonels. But I’ll tell you what some of my stir-crazy men think. They think we got a great opportunity here. We got a chance to wipe out Germany. Just wipe it clean off the map. Knock everything down, every city, every castle, all the bridges, all the roads. Everything. Don’t leave two stones standing together. Just wipe the slate clean. Turn Germany into a prairie, then ship over a few buffalo and let them start from scratch. Now, what do you think of that, colonel?
Charles Bronson, Battle of the Bulge. The response given by Henry Fonda was that he and his men had been on the line too long, and Bronson said that might be right. Similar sentiments made in Band of Brothers:
I’d agree with Evelyn Waugh— it is, in fact, great cheek of the German bishops to attempt to tell the Church at large just where She’s doing things wrong when that part of the Church in their tender care is collapsing.
In 2021the Catholic Church in Germany had over 360,000 members file papers with the government to leave the Catholic Church. In 2022, the number jumped even higher, with 522,821 people declaring themselves no longer Catholic.
There are about 21 million Catholics in Germany. In just the past two years, over 4% of those Catholics went down to their government offices and filed paperwork (and paid a 30-euro filing fee) to tell the Church they no longer wanted anything to do with Her.
The bishops overseeing such a loss of souls in their care have no place telling the rest of the Church how She needs to improve Herself. Instead, as Waugh suggested, they should be in sackcloth and ashes.

The god-emperor, Hirohito killed the Americcan people by starting the war.
Hitler killed his own people, the Germans, by starting the war.
Hitler killed the American people and the Allies by starting the war.
The Huns are at it again
I read Rahner, Reuther and Kung. Not a Catholic among them. The greed for power is palpable. Stinks to high heaven.
