Too Christian and not secular enough for many a Katholic I suppose. If they could only replace Jesus with Judas then they would have the Church of their dreams.
A German Church.

That puts me in mind of Obama. When some pointed out that, despite the official narrative, he wasn’t great at public speaking – especially extemporaneously – they said it’s because he is so above us all, and sometimes struggles to convey his profound intellect to us little people.

Dave G, you nailed it about Obama. Another Great Communicator that really is not is Bill Clinton. If one reads the full text of his speeches it’s obvious

Obama is quite fluent, but he’s dependent on the TelePrompTer. I don’t think our political system selects for capable public speakers. It selects for people who can run fundraising and publicity campaigns, which in turn means it selects for people who can ‘work a room’. Other than Reagan and Kennedy, we haven’t had a president in the last 70 years who was much of a public speaker. Other than Reagan, I don’t think we’ve had any who had a set of fixed political principles. (Eisenhower was a man of integrity, but there were wide swaths of public policy about which he truly had no opinion).

One thing that distresses me is the quantum of people in in Congress who’ve had a very truncated work life outside of political office. Barack Obama, Joseph Biden, Kevin McCarthy, John Thune, Trent Lott, Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, upChuck Schumer all exemplify this. Richard Durbin and Bitc* McConnell have a tad more background, but that’s all.
