I thought California Dreamin’ was by The Mamas and the Papas?

You thought correctly. I guess this would be satirical license. Or else someone at the Bee forgot their morning coffee. 😂
The Beach Boys did a video a few years after the Mamas and Papas just walking along and singing. It was good. I assume the writer had no idea who did the original.
California Dreamin was written by John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. It was originally intended to be recorded by Barry McGuire who recorded the hit Eve of Destruction. The Mamas and Papas were to sing back up and harmony on McGuire’s recording. After hearing some of the takes, the producer, Lou Adler, thought it would better the Mamas and Papas record the song. His instincts were apparently correct.
Darn it. The beat me to it, creating an Escape Song. I’ve been working on “Farewell, California”, based on “Farewell, Nova Scotia” (as performed by Ian & Sylvia). Haven’t gotten to far, though. “Farewell, California, your seabound coasts, where your taxes high and dreary be. For, when I am far away, in those rolling Texas hills, will you never heave a sigh, and wish for me.”
Gordon Lightfoot’s rendition of Farewell Nova Scotia was always my favorite.
