The Ballad of Davy Crockett

I believed it was a wicked, unjust measure…. I voted against this Indian bill, and my conscience yet tells me that I gave a good honest vote, and one that I believe will not make me ashamed in the day of judgement.

—David Crockett, A Narrative of the Life of David Crockett

Something for the weekend.  The Ballad of Davy Crockett (1956), sung by that son of the volunteer state Tennessee Ernie Ford.  A legend in his own lifetime, his folklore status has obscured the fact that he had a very interesting political career, marked by stances that he took on principle, in defiance of their unpopularity, and if fate had been kinder to him he might loom even larger in American history.
