Sister of Saint Epiphanus. He convinced Odoacer, the German commander who deposed in 476 the last puppet emperor of the Western Roman Empire, to restore her to her convent in Pavia after he kidnapped her. Noted for her sanctity and the miracles which attended her. I assume she was a rare beauty also to attract the eye of Odoacer. A great novel is waiting to be written about this incident. She passed away in 500.

The province of Pavia was my maternal grandfather’s home before he emigrated to New England with some compadres in his village – due to ww unrest there. He loved that home and somehow fashioned theirs after it.
