The Weather-Vane Stands Firm

News that I missed, courtesy of The Babylon Bee:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Mitt Romney reassured supporters today that he would be remaining a faithful member of the Democratic Party.

“The Democratic Party can continue to count on me through thick and thin,” said Mr. Romney in a statement. “While Senator Sinema and I have both occasionally voted with Congressional Republicans, I want voters to rest assured that I will never go turncoat like her. I’m staying put.”

After Sinema’s exit left Senate control in the balance, Democrats rushed to reaffirm Mr. Romney’s allegiance. “I knew he would stay true to his progressive roots,” said Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. “Obviously, Mr. Romney was going to vote for our bill enshrining the government’s redefinition of marriage. The real test was when Mr. Romney helped crush religious liberty by defeating the amendment put forth by his fellow Senator from Utah. That’s when I knew Mitt would be a Democrat for life.”

Although Mr. Romney’s intermittent breaks from party-line votes have earned him a reputation for independence, sources close to Romney do not believe he will ever follow in Sinema’s footsteps. “I just don’t see it happening. The man’s veins run blue,” said a high-level staffer on condition of anonymity. “At this point, Romney has staked too much of his persona on destroying the Republican party to really go independent. No one would take it seriously.”

Go here to read the rest.  To the Democrat Party, almost always  a friend, to the Republican party almost always a backstabber.  One of the biggest myths in contemporary politics is that Romney is in any way a nice guy.  A weak guy, a treacherous guy but never a nice guy.

I think his appealing aspect has been not that he’s a ‘nice guy’, but that he’s fairly unpretentious and accessible. I read one internet account of a man who went shopping to stock up for a bad winter storm in Boston. He turns around and who does he see in line behind him but the Governor. You saw, I assume, the Youtube of a man sticking it to Romney in an airport lounge. There he is, alone in the lounge, reading. You think hag Pelosi goes anywhere without goons?

What’s puzzling about Romney is that he actually is a man with many talents and agreeable features. The there’s this other stuff. Note, him being in Congress at age 75 is quite inconvenient for his wife and family. If he wants to keep active, he can buy a business near where he lives and run it. Otherwise, he needs to attend to his wife and grandchildren – Chautauqua, Elderhostel, &c.

I agree fully with your statement; but the same thing could be said with respect to almost all the Rep. leaders in Congress (with the partiial exception of Mcconnell, wbo made a least a gesture tiward protecting traditional Rep. values against Trump Thug)..

Trump hasn’t done anything thuggish. In McConnell’s hands, ‘traditional Republican values’ mean carrying water for the Chamber-of-Commerce lobbyist and fellating your donors.

Art–That is substantially true; but is it any worse than fellating Trump, which Rep. leaders (McCarthy et al.) spend much of their time doing. At the very least the fat cats Mcconnell hangs out with actually give some money to the party; I’ve never seen Trump givea red cent to anyone but himself.

They don’t, that’s just your dishonest parry.

Trump has a popular constituency and some practical ideas on public policy. McConnell’s donors want carve outs for themselves and are hostile to the base on every other question.

Apparently, he covers being of the ruling class.

He has all the qualifications: dumb, disloyal, and disastrous = he could not have done worse in 2012 if he tried.
