A.D. 382. St. Gregory writes: “If I must speak the truth, I feel disposed to shun every conference of Bishops; for never saw I synod brought to a happy issue, and remedying, and not rather aggravating, existing evils. For rivalry and ambition are stronger than reason,—do not think me extravagant for saying so,—and a mediator is more likely to incur some imputation himself than to clear up the imputations which others lie under.” Ep. 129.It must ever be kept in mind that a passage like this only relates, and is here quoted as only relating, to that miserable time of which it is spoken. Nothing more can be argued from it than that the “Ecclesia docens” is not at every time the active instrument of the Church’s infallibility.

As Pope Francis just expressed today in Kazakhstan, “..the pluralism and differences in religion, skin color, gender, race and language are expressions of the wisdom of God’s will in creation.” Thus, the German bishops, the synodal way, etc., are just another expression of that wisdom of God in creation, apparently.

With all due respect to Bishop Tobin, the synodal way didn’t turn into a political convention with results that defy the teaching of the Church. Rather, that was its intent all along. Actually, according to the logic of the statement Pope Francis signed on to today, there can not be any such thing as defying the teachings of the church (as if they have any actual claim to divine authority), as any other expression of religion, doctrine, etc., is just as much a part of God’s will in creation as anything else.

On another note, given that Bishop Schneider- who is a bishop in Kazakhstan- was privately assured by PF that the original Abu Dhabi statement about God willing a plurality of religions referred to God’s “permissive will,” is it expert level trolling that this new statement is being signed in Kazakhstan?

Mea culpa, I think I misquoted the statement signed in Khazakhstan. I think it actually reads: “..the pluralism and differences in religion, skin color, gender, race and language are expressions of the wisdom of God’s will in creation. Except for traditional Catholicism, which definitely isn’t an expression of God’s will in creation.”
