June 2, 2022-The Orville Season Three Begins- Open Thread

Odd that what began as a parody show has turned out to be the most Trek like show since TOS.  The usual Open Thread rules apply:  be concise, be charitable and, above all, be amusing!

In my mind, the Rick Berman Star Trek series (post season 1 of TNG, DS9, VOY and, to some extent, ENT) are “Star Trek,” with DS9 being the pinnacle which will likely never be achieved again, similar to Empire Strikes Back’s place in Star Wars. It was interesting, however, to watch the DS9 retrospective “What We Left Behind” in which they spent nearly the entire documentary lauding the characters, story and the world they built which made the show so great, only to end by lamenting (among other things) that that they didn’t make Garak a full-on groomer.

Off-topic: I thought Barnette could win.

I don’t know much about her, she might have been a terrible pick, but this just brings back memories of 2016 and why I’ll always think “not at all” when I see your Miss Me Yet? articles.

The Next Generation holds the crown for characters, plots, and deep questions, “the Measure of a Man

(not witty, or timely, but that’s me all over.) They should have named me Earnest.

Disagree. The original has not been surpassed. Lwaxana Troi is pretty funny.

I suppose this disqualifies me from being a True Trekkie, but I’ll cast another vote for TOS as unsurpassed. Although I’m a fan of Patrick Stewart’s acting, especially his Mr. Scrooge, TNG and the other follow-up series never caught my fancy. The few episodes we watched of TNG were well done, and we enjoyed several of the characters, but it never occurred to us to watch it regularly or to fire up the old VCR for it.
The clips from LA Law are interesting. Never watched that, either, and I don’t really recall why not. In retrospect I may have felt, as a lawyer, that watching a Hollywood view of a big city law firm would just be like what my grandmother used to call a “busman’s holiday.” Maybe I should go check it out, after all.

I read somewhere that MacFarlane pitched The Orville as a comedy/parody show so that he would not get sued by Star Trek for copyright infringement. But he always intended it to be more Star Trek-like than the current incarnations of the franchise.
