It’s an article at Crisis, well worth reading, but I really wanted to share this ancient quote from it:
“Today a great silence reigns on earth, a great silence and a great stillness. A great silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh.” Even in His death, the Lord obeys the commandments. Jesus keeps holy the Sabbath as His body lays resting in the tomb the morning following His bloody crucifixion and death.
You can read the rest of the article here.
It’s a little sad that I’ve heard more about this in fantasy novels (Chancy’s Net of Dawn and Bones opens in hell, or at least someplace infested with demons) than I have in a religious setting!
A very similar quote appears on the DivineOffice.org for Holy Saturday. It is on their web site and on the About Today section on their mobile app.
There’s a couple of really good hymns about ‘He has broken down the gates of Hell’, too– and it’s such a powerful theme, just a little sad it’s not dwelt on longer.
On the seventh day God completed the work he had been doing; He rested on the seventh day from all the work He had undertaken.
~ Genesis 2:2
