The worship of the ugly that came into the Church with Vatican II elevated bad taste into almost a sacramental. Marx is a heretic, but he is quite mainstream in making the Mass as banal as possible.

The altar indeed looks like it was constructed by two 12-year-olds from obviously 3 ill-fitting and weathered pieces of scrap plywood found out behind the garage.
Ha! True Steve- It could pass as paper mache with a spattle stucco texture finish. Very 1980’s IMHO. They look like clowns up there.
I don’t know why the priest chose to step on a pride flag on his way to the altar, but I can’t fault his judgment.
