Fanfiction writers have defiled Tolkiens works for decades.
This is only a fanfiction with a bigger budget. The only way it becomes more than that is if you give it the recognition as something more. This includes obsessing over it and saying that it actually had the power to do anything to Tolkien’s works.
They want your outrage. Don’t give it to them. The worst thing for them is not that it fails monetarily, but that no one cares enough about their screeching to even talk about them in the first place.
Fanfiction writers were what Tolkien was aiming for when he created an English mythology, as he said was his goal.
He grew up reading the plays based on Greek and Roman mythology, for heaven’s sake– adapting and changing and morphing and creating new was the idea.
That the vast majority of modern fantasy very obviously has Tolkien as an ancestor? I think he’d be happy with that.
The problem is taking this nonsense seriously.
And it is nonsense– no different than any other adaptation that keeps a few names and maybe some scenery, ‘based on a true story’ or ‘inspired by real events’ movie style.
Shorter:
It’s not the fanfiction.
It’s that it’s bad fanfiction.
When I look at the woke repurposers their aim is usually subverting expectations. Funny how they insist on attaching themselves to existing franchises, rather than producing all new fresh franchises from scratch. The primary purpose appears to be topical quota based stories. The questionable results more suggest that their obsession with diversity has weakened their creativity. Too much bad storytelling.

When the fans react negatively they are called the Fandom Menace. Subverting expectations appears to be a one way street. The fans are not permitted to subvert the repurposers expectations.
Nerdrotic has a lot of videos on the Amazon LOTR. The recent one is “Amazon Instant REGRET! Hides CRINGE LOTR: Rings of Power ‘Superfans’ Video”
