My Pathetic Congress Critter

The book among Republicans on Kinzinger in Illinois has long been that he is a fake conservative and a complete narcissist with delusions of adequacy.  That he has acted out this psychodrama since January 6, 2020 surprises me not a whit, because it directed attention to his favorite person: Adam Kinzinger.  Predictably the Democrats in Illinois rewarded his Judas goat act by carving up his district.  After mulling a hopeless run for governor, Kinzinger is now leaving politics.  A man with his skill in turning his coat will no doubt be showered with offers.  I wish him all the ill fortune in the world.

Kinzinger exemplifies the suburban country club Republicans that were relegated to minority status in congress for years under the redoubtable Bob Michel who supported majority (democrat) programs in return for an occasional crumb from the likes of Sam Rayburn and Lyndon Johnson. Reagan largely got rid of this species but like the salamander, it just grows a new tail to make a minor change in its appearance and shows up again.

Robert Michel’s father was a machinist. Adam Kinzinger’s father ran this outfit (https://hshministries.org/). Michel attended a local private college on his GI Bill benefits and Kinzinger attended the state university in the small city in which he grew up. Neither of these people are from a fancy bourgeois background, much less the patriciate.

Michel may have been an unimaginative political careerist, but he was not an auxilliary of the Democratic caucus. The American Conservative Union calculates he voted their way about 85% of the time between 1972 and 1995, above the median for the House Republican caucus. He wasn’t accepting crumbs from either Sam Rayburn or Lyndon Johnson. At the time Johnson left Congress and Rayburn died, he was in his 3d term in the House of Representatives, about 38 years old.

Kinzinger actually has been a problem for party whips, though he does not have a liberal voting record. (He appears to vote with the opposition about 40% of the time). Buying into the Democratic Party’s inane and vicious talking points is correlated with alienation from the Republican caucus on policy matters, but not identified with it. Elise Stefanik is a policy dissident with not time for the hooey and Pat Toomey is a non-dissident who bought it.

You sometimes wonder if the actual problem the Republican Party faces is that its office-holders in Washington are terminally obtuse.

I’d be pleased if he’d straighten up and fly right, but one might wager he’s a finished product. He and his wife give off a bad vibe. She’s been a PR maven since she finished her schooling, working for politicians. As for him, he did spend about 6 years on active duty in the Air Force and > a decade in the Reserves. That’s all to the good. That aside, he’s held elective office the last 20 years. At 43, I’m going to wager he’s too old to return to to active duty, though apparently he had some sort of deployment recently. She’s never worked anywhere but Washington. I don’t imagine he’ll be returning to McLean County.

He married quite late in life (at 41), to a woman about a decade his junior. He and his wife had a destination wedding. Told everyone to assemble in Guatemala of all places.
