China-The Interior

Much of what we think we know about contemporary China is limited to a few prosperous coastal urban areas.  Most of China remains third world with poverty which to American eyes would be unacceptable.  China has come a long way materially since the days of Mao, but the level of prosperity is often overstated by the Chinese government and unthinkingly accepted by the gullible in the West.

It’s no different than with the case of the USSR. Look at National Geographic and Time photos from the 1960s or 1970s, when every visitor had a “minder”. Then look at the photos from the 1980s when glasnost allowed much freer access. It was stunning how really crappy most of the country was.

Having a famine well within living memory will do that to a society. Only a fool would pass up free food under those circumstances.
