Well, That Didn’t Take Long

Attempting to backdoor vaccine mandates through OSHA was completely insane.

What’s insane is the interaction between public health officialdom, the government lawyers, and the politicians. We’ve got a pretty good idea (see Israeli data) that the vaccine isn’t that effective. We know bloody well it is not sterilizing, so what is the point of the mandates? Now look at the northern tier states. Hapless Michigan is in bad shape in every coronavirus wave, but other states are simply not experiencing the case spikes they were last year and (knock on wood) the association between case counts and deaths also seems to be more attenuated.

My limited experience in nuclear is that when a court decides something or delays something about things nuclear (very, very rare because most courts don’t know anything about nuclear and realize they don’t know), the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission is loathe to go against what the court decision says, even if the President wants it otherwise (and to my knowledge, that has never happened – no President was foolish enough to do that in the case of things nuclear because no President wants the liability in case he’s wrong). So OSHA declining enforcement of the Biden vaccine mandate after a 5th Circuit decision against or delay on mandate implementation (I forgot which) is typical of these regulatory agencies. The Environmental Protection Agency can however be a bit different. Democrats when in power fill the EPA with tree hugging drones who know no science and even less law.

Yes, the Wolverine State is once again number one when it comes to corona rates. And it’s not just cases here: we are three quarters of the way to our peak hospitalization rate of last spring. We also have less capacity here due to staff burnout, so God help us.

And yet Jim Acosta is not screaming about the Whitmer Variant, as he did with DeSantis. It’s almost like our media is a brainless flock of partisan hacks who freeze up when they can’t repeat Democratic talking points.

Note also that this is happening despite Michigan reaching Madam Edict’s 70 percent vaccination target.

Anyway, as has become obvious to those who do have more than a brain stem north of their talkholes (journalists need not apply), this thing is a seasonal monster that feeds on people being shoved indoors, either by the heat or by the cold. Worse yet, it seems clear that at least two bullets in the vaccine gun (Pfizer and J&J) fade in effectiveness much more quickly than projected. Moderna appears to be more durable, but even it fades.

So, yeah: we are in for the long haul, and not just in Michigan, but globally. Zero covid is for suckers. We need treatment medicines and better, cheaper tests, neither of which have been prioritized by the current administration. But at least with the former, we have some candidates in the offing. And it looks like Michigan would be a great place to drop a couple of Emergency Use Authorizations.

Now watch as our ponderous, reactive national bureaucracies are slow on the uptake once again.

See the data in Sweden and Switzerland (among others), which suggest this thing will largely burn itself out. Data from other countries (e.g. the Netherlands) suggest it’s now more tractable and readily treated. Knock on wood.
