Koch was from a generation of liberals that I miss. He had a lot of experiences in his life outside of politics, including serving as a combat infantryman in the ETO during World War II, that made him a man in whole and not merely a professional politician. His opinions could shift as he thought about issues and was exposed to new developments. He had a keen intelligence and he never put his brain on hold. He was never a slave to ideology. A broadly tolerant man, he wrote against what he perceived to be a rising tide of anti-Catholicism in 2010. Our nation has fallen off the cliff as to our political class.
