I find it cute, how be BBC always refers to US as “the states”, “the colonies”. Few people in New England can trace their ancestors back to England, I’m one, but only 25%.
British intelligence services tend to call us “the cousins”. The States has always struck me as accurate enough. During World War II it was picked up on by a fair number of GIs serving in the ETO.
“The cousins”– I like that.
