PopeWatch: Chile

From Chile:

The spire of the Church of the Assumption collapsed as the church burned, drawing cheers from demonstrators protesting outside the building. The interior of the St. Francis Borgia Church was gutted by the fire, and both buildings may be beyond repair.

The attacks came as demonstrators across the country called for a constitution, and marked the one year anniversary of large anti-government protests that took place across Chile last year, during which riots destroyed supermarkets and other businesses, and reportedly caused more than 30 deaths.

The demonstrations began last October in Santiago over a now-suspended increase in subway fares. Other regions joined in the protests, expanding their grievances to inequality and the cost of healthcare.

A number of churches across Chile have been attacked and looted amid the demonstrations in the country.

Rioters have previously set fires inside St. Francis Borgia Church; in January the church suffered heavy damage after fires were set and demonstrators blocked firefighters trying to access the Church.

In a statement published late Sunday, Archbishop Celestino Aós condemned the attacks.

“Violence is evil, and whoever sows violence reaps destruction, pain and death. Let us never justify any violence,” for political or social purposes, the archbishop said.

“The poor are the most affected” by these acts of vandalism, the archbishop said, as he expressed solidarity with parishioners from both churches destroyed by the fires.

Aós called on Catholics not to lose faith or hope, because “love is stronger.”

Go here to read the rest.  Church burnings have been a favorite tactic in Spanish speaking countries since the 19th century.  Catholic clerics can play footsie with the Left all they wish to, but the Left will continue to hate and despise the Church.  You want more Francos?  This is the way you get more Francos.

Church hierarchy gravitates to state power whatever color it happens to be. On the question of serving God or mammon, God usually comes up short.

I am a little confused on who the protesters are. Are they pro-Socialists who see the Church/hierarchy standing in the way of government control and their own power? Or are they anti-government who see the Church/hierarchy as part of the oppressive government that keeps the people impoverished and in chains?
.
When I was younger, I thought the Church perfectly content with poverty among the masses and encouraged it with large families (I was pro-contraception/abortion some 30 years ago). Now I am under the impression the Church is perfectly content with poverty among the masses and encourages it with various socialist style economic teachings.
.
In both cases the hierarchy would seem mostly concerned with their own power and comfort. Perhaps I am being harsh, but their behavior during the pandemic has been less than stellar.

“Violence is evil…” No it isn’t. It may be evil, but it can also be just. It depends on the motivation. For instance, using violence to stop someone from burning down a church is not evil. Something tells me it will be easier to rebuild the building than to rebuild what the Left has done to the hierarchy. These swishops must go.

The country got hit with a COVID depression in the 3d quarter of 2020, but it wasn’t suffering a business recession prior to that. Chile is just about the most affluent country in Latin America and they are the one Latin American country not bedeviled by horrid rates of street crime. And they already have a constitution. I wonder to what degree this is sorosphere rent-a-crowd.

Tomorrow’s Pope Watch Today.

Even allowing for the possibility his remarks were deceptively edited, this finds me struggling to avoid calumny.
