Instapundit Nails It: 1860 Meet 2020

WEIRD THAT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO WERE JUST RECENTLY DUMPING ON CONFEDERATES ARE NOW ENDORSING REBELLION AGAINST FEDERAL AUTHORITY:

The Democrats are committed to the view that what is happening in Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Atlanta and other cities is mere “peaceful protest.” Thus, the Trump administration is unjustified in sending in federal officers to protect federal property, like courthouses. And to the extent that anything untoward happens, it is Donald Trump’s fault. This was the main theory that the Democrats tried to advance through their “questioning” of Attorney General Barr.

This theme is so stupid that it boggles the mind. Presumably most people have seen video footage of the violence that has taken place in cities like Portland and Minneapolis. They have seen violent assaults and burning buildings, long before any federal agents arrived. They have seen massed, armed criminals doing battle with police officers. Can the Democrats possibly be fooling anyone?

Well, the 99% of the press that gives a bad name to the other 1% is doing its best to help them.

Go here to comment.  Democrats, the last time a great many of you supported secession, it didn’t work out well for you.  The modern Democrat Party, the home of nullification and de facto secession.

Time to face an uncomfortable fact. I am unfortunately convinced that the people in the cities where this lawless anarchy is taking place would elect or re-elect like minded leftist if given the chance. These people are engaged in an attempt to overthrow the government of the United States, not peacefully withdraw from it. If their state governments vote to withdraw from the United States, it may be the last and best hope for those remaining to live in a free and moral state. The cultural and political divide may have become to great to mend. Even if fortunate enough to re-elect Trump , I do not look for this to end. I hope I not correct.

There should be widespread public revulsion against what’s being done by antifa in cahoots with Democratic officialdom. AFAICT, the people revolted by this are people who never vote Democratic anyway. One of the problems we have as a society is that most of our countrymen react to abuses with cud-chewing indifference or by making excuses for the abusers. Another problem we have is that our elite class today is arguably the most irresponsible and unworthy collection of baboons ever to hold the positions they do.

And all of this is ongoing when the country needs every ounce of strength to resist whatever horrors the Chinese leadership has planned for the rest of the globe.

I’m afraid we need, at this time in our history, our Franco or our Pinochet or our King Hussein. And that person is nowhere to be seen.

This is spot on. Most of the craziness is really around that other thing the declaration gave a promissory note against: abortion.

Problem is, however, that Republicans are holding the bag for Democrats on the Confederate statues.

One difference between 1860 and 2020: This time, both sides want out.
