Requiescat In Pace: Jerry Lewis

Jerry Lewis has passed away at 91.  Growing up, the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon was a favorite of my late parents, and they always made sure to contribute.  Like most things about Lewis in his turbulent life, controversy dogged his efforts on behalf of those afflicted with the disease, but over the life of the telethon he raised 2.45 billion dollars for the fight against that insidious genetic malady.  At his best Lewis was a brilliant comic, at his worst only the French could stand him.  He kept his politics to himself, unlike so many in his industry, but judging from the few comments he did make he was on the conservative side of the political ledger, at least in later life.  Lewis will be remembered for making people laugh and his charitable activities and that is not a bad legacy.
