Dwight Harvest Days Basset Waddle

Dwight is having its annual Harvest Days this weekend, and at a quarter to one the parade will be passing our house.  The unique feature of the parade is the great Dwight Basset Waddle.  You have not truly lived until you have seen a thousand bassets waddling down the street!  We will be observing it all from the comfort of our porch with our Jack Russell Terrier Cali, who will no doubt be sending out copious greetings to her cousins!  Go here to read about this event which captures the charm, and occasional goofiness, of my beloved village!

Every one of those basset hounds is more qualified to be President than either Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Hussein Obama, and more qualified to be Pope than Jorge Bergoglio.

Bassetts are a strange but endearing dog, but we don’t have many in NZ – more likely to have Beagles, Collies, Labs, Border collies and the like.
But this is a REAL dog – bred in NZ 🙂

Anyone of a certain age remember “Cleo” the wise cracking female basset hound on The People’s Choice with Jackie Cooper? She made the breed very popular.

Basset’s are naturally humorous with their Buster Keaton look but somewhat difficult to live with. We had one for awhile but gave it back to the kennel after a year as it was untrainable and had an ill humor. in our area we have a Basset rescue society for folks who don’t want them any longer. But I still like them–from a distance.

The Dwight windmill is interesting. We have numerous light houses along our lake shore and the design of Dwight’s windmill is uncannily familiar. Don. Could you ” shine some light,” on the design that makes up your village mill?

BTW…..the Bassett rescue society might find Dwight very beneficial for future placements.
What does it cost to ship a Bassett these days. ?

Great link.
Thanks.
I love the fact that the property was used as a treatment center for fighting
alcoholism.

As for the old windmill.
Impressive!

Thanks for a small tour of your village.
Charles Kuralt (rip) would of been perfect to do his Sunday Morning show in your Dwight IL.

I wonder if he ever did?

I miss his talent and open hearted demeanor.

Michael Dowd, When my boys were in grade school we fostered young male basset. My eldest dearly wanted to because we had had such a nice one in the neighborhood. It turned out this dog, Sam, didn’t like males or children so we returned Sam to the Basset Rescue. After our Rhodesian Ridgeback died, I fostered many puppy mill bitches, puppies and seniors for RR Rescue. My husband was very understanding. The rescue parade at the annual club’s picnic was always a fun time. Eventually there is a right dog for the right family.

Cam:
After paying somewhere around $300. for the Basset and keeping it for a year or so I gave it back to the kennel free of charge. I told the kennel guy that we took it twice to dog training class with no good effect. He simply said: didn’t I know Bassets couldn’t be trained. Now he tells us!

Dwight Harvest Days with a waddle parade is the essence of small town America. Thanks for posting a bit of innocent fun. Good to see even by video now that there seems to be almost daily homemade bomb explosions, police assassinations, and a rough and tumble campaign season where even pro sports have become politicized,
