Soon to be Extinct Nun

Time magazine, yes it is still being published, serves one useful function.  It normally gives insight into how doctrinaire liberals view the world.  It is often unintentionally hilarious as the writers demonstrate a cluelessness about the subject that they are writing about, which would rise to the level of Swiftian if it were intentional, instead of being the product of a mentality that cannot rise above the purely parochial mindset of the left that dominates most of those whose scribblings are published by Time.  Case in point:  Jo Piazza and her take on the coming extinction of liberal nuns:

Why would a generation of young women raised to believe that they can be anything join an institution that tells them there is something they absolutely cannot be, that there is a certain level they will never reach? Many of the women who are nuns today joined the vocation because it was a way to become highly educated, travel the world and dedicate themselves to a higher good without being beholden to a husband or children.

Young women today can do that with a passport and a Kickstarter account.

  • No woman, female human, has ever claimed that Jesus Christ has called her to Holy Orders. Even the New York Times cannot testify to a woman being called to Holy Orders unless they own that person, which is unconstitutional.
    .
It is patently nonsense for a female to hold up the bread and say: “THIS IS MY BODY”, the words of Consecration, because it is not. The bread is confected into the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, true God and true man by the will of God, the Father, God, the Son, Jesus Christ, and the actions of the Holy Spirit, through the Catholic Church by a man ordained through the Catholic Church to the Sacrament of Holy Orders. ORDERS, ORDERS are indeed orders, even when holy, are not being observed by these heretical persons. Unless the woman claims to be a man, a finite man, the woman bears false testimony in a court of law and commits blasphemy. Blasphemy against the Son of God, Jesus Christ is perjury in a court of law and heresy in the Catholic Church.
    .
Too many individuals refuse to accept the fact that a new human being comes into existence as science has proved through DNA, time and time again, (perhaps not the New York Time(s), pun intended), that the frozen embryos are persons who are cheated of a warm and nourishing womb in a woman body through “in vitro fertilization” test tubes, imprisoned in liquid nitrogen, and at the mercy of cold, merciless individuals. The three choices the parents of an in vitro fertilized human child are given are: 1. Freeze the living child for future implantation. 2. Destroy the child. (kill the child) 3. Put the frozen child up for adoption.
    .
When these frozen children are adopted and allowed to grow in a warm and nurturing woman’s womb these living, human children are called Snowflake Babies, several of whom have testified and bear testimony to being human beings from the very first moment of existence. The Snowflake Babies are scientific proof that a sovereign person exists from the very first cell of a fertilized human egg.
    .
This comment must end here. But unfortunately, the women running around like chickens with their heads cut off, with nothing but political correctness, are an embarrassment to themselves, other women and the Catholic Church.
    .
Has anyone any suggestion that would enable these misguided, pitiable creatures to ascertain for themselves the truth? The whole world is watching this circus act of idiocy and using these laughable creatures as items for their stories. Or maybe this is the beginning of hell?

  • Disobedience is not a virtue.
Eve’s disobedience opened the beginnings of hell on earth.

The woman of obedience brought forth the dawn of salvation. If wayward nuns could adopt Mary the Blessed Virgin as model, then the lives of nuns would be forever fruitful and fulfilling.

If Jesus wanted women to hold “more power and leadership roles,” then Jesus would of elevated His Mother in those terms. Instead He gives us His mother as a model of humility and obedience.
Nuns who find this out of date need to review their vocation…possibly give it up and join the ranks of the disoriented liberal (c)atholic church.

  • No one has more power or more leadership than a mother, whether she be a mother physically or a mother spiritually. These liberal nit wits are incapable of comprehending that by her fiat, the Blessed Virgin Mary through submission contained within her womb more Power than any mortal man could ever possess. The three worst words in the English language are liberal progressive Democrat followed closely by feminist and environmentalist.

  • The author’s “Swiftian cluelessness” was indeed hilariously highlighted in another phrase from the original Time article:
“Nuns are dying out because their population is aging and young women are not joining their ranks in the numbers they once did.”
    Umm, yah, righhhht…d’ya think?
In an age of heightened nihilism and lack of purposefulness in life, a young woman should join THESE unconsciously self-parodying nit-wits? Havent you answered your own inquiry, Ms Piazza?

  • Nuns For Choice – how utterly pathetic these women are. It’s a good thing that these liberal leftist orders are dying out. They don’t belong in the classroom poisoning young minds. “Save the Baby Whales”. No, “Save the Baby Humans”, Sister. Ms Piazza should have done more research; she would have found that orders that are traditional have vocations.

  • CAM: “Nuns For Choice”
    .
In vitro fertilization and implantation (test tube babies) and DNA are scientific proof that a new human being comes into existence and life with the first individual cell. The newly begotten human being worships God by being a human being. Peter Singer of Princeton likes to define the new person by citing self awareness and conciousness.
    .
One cannot drive a car without a car. One can imagine or think about driving a car without actually owning a car to drive. The soul of the person imagines having a brain to think about thinking and the brain comes into being. In the stillness of the womb the baby grows a brain. The thinking person comes into being.
    .
These people are cheerleaders for Satan, the devil’s spawn. Halloween is coming.

  • Actually the statististics show that the fall in the numbers of nuns/religious sisters, which had continued at a steady pace from 1970 to 2005, has slowed remarkably in the past 10 years and it appears it will soon turn around and the numbers will start growing again. Tracing the same path as the numbers of priests, and, more recently, religious brothers/monks.

  • Ronk, Thanks. Yes… the Nashville Dominicans is one order that has had a large increase in vocations. I doubt Ms. Piazza would have used the statistics because it doesn’t fit her agneda.

  • Ronk, you are certainly right about (as CAM observes) reasonably traditional Novus Ordo Sisters’ orders recovering in terms of numbers, but here on the VL (Very Left, as in Vladimir Lenin) Coast, I work closely with two women’s religious orders, one of which has participated in the infamous “Nuns on the Bus” protest tour group, for example, as well as prominent openly documented activism in the most explicitly and publicly pro-choice aspects of the LCWR: and they couldnt buy a novice if you paid them (Maybe I should suggest that to them…Naw!). One of the orders hasnt had a novice in about 4 years, and their median age must be 65…or more.. So, by their fruits ye shall know them.

  • Alas. No light on the Piazza.

  • Jo Piazza’s garbage is typical of Time Magazine, a liberal victim’s rag. I can’t believe it didn’t go financially bankrupt decades ago. Miss Piazza doesn’t address the legitimate reasons for Vatican concerns. These include fidelity to Catholic teaching, arrogance and contempt towards authority to which they professed vows, obsession with “women’s ordination,” the compulsion of many nuns to revel in their delusional “victim” status ad nauseum. Miss Piazza reminds me of those radicals who came of age in the 1960s (Hillary Clinton, and her ilk) who never grew up and can’t stop their adolescent rebellion again the relentless oppressors who are everywhere. Like Time Magazine, they never wanted to grow up and become adults, and will die as miserable ranting and raving rebels because that’s all they know and are capable of doing.

Has Rome Overreacted to the LCRW?

Tuesday, April 24, AD 2012

So, you think you’re a calm and balanced guy, and you read all these news stories about how the nuns are just “stunned” that Rome would investigate them. I mean, “stunned. How could the mean old Vatican investigate nuns?

Well, Thomas L. McDonald of God and the Machine gives us a little bit of an idea. He takes a look at the upcoming LCWR Assembly 2012 (to be held in August), and notes the keynote topic: “Mystery Unfolding: Leading in the Evolutionary Now” which will be delivered by Barbara Marx Hubbard. He takes a look at Barbara Marx Hubbard’s site and finds the following:

It has become obvious that a creative minority of humanity is undergoing a profound inner mutation or transformation. Evolutionary ideas are not only serving to make sense of this change, but also acting to catalyze the potential within us to transform. (Thought creates; specific thought creates specifically.)

It is the planetary crisis into which we were born that is awakening our sleeping potential for transformation. Planet Earth has given birth to a species capable of choosing whether to consciously evolve ourselves and our social forms, or to continue the course we have set toward our own extinction. And the choice is clear.

All great spiritual paths lead us to this threshold of our own consciousness, but none can guide us across the great divide — from the creature human to the cocreative human. None can guide us in managing the vast new powers given us by science and technology. None of us have been there yet.

What we can envision

The enriched noosphere, the thinking layer of Earth, is now replete with evolutionary technologies that can transform the material world. Within the next 30 to 50 years, we could transform our physical bodies, our minds, our social structures, and set in motion the emergence of a new civilization.

  • She sounds like a Scientologist.
“Planet Earth has given birth to a species………”
I thought God, not planet earth created us – “Gaia, we thank you for our being” [sarc]

We are told that he did not die.
Nup, Jesus died alright – otherwise he could not have had His victory over death.
I should just leave it at that.

Yes, this one is certainly one for the men in white coats to take away.

  • So she’s saying we didn’t really NEED Jesus, He was just pointing the way toward the brave new future awaiting us. He didn’t REALLY suffer death and rise from the dead. And we, the human race, will someday achieve this here on earth. But the question at the back of my mind, after those future humans come to the natural end of their 600 year lifespan, is what will they find? Endless death or endless life with Our Lord?

Perhaps what the good sisters need to hear at their conference is someone who will preach Christ crucified. Surely they didn’t vow their lives to their Bridegroom to betray Him by filling their minds with this scifi trash. Their leaders should be ashamed of themselves.

  • I only hope that its not too late to bring back the sisters from the abyss. We need to pray and fast for their reversion to the Faith.

  • “Planet Earth has given birth to a species capable of choosing whether to consciously evolve ourselves and our social forms, or to continue the course we have set toward our own extinction. And the choice is clear.”

Now there’s a real Social Darwinist.

  • To your question, my answer is NO.

But I wish Rome would listen with respect to other things as well.

  • After Obama’s election, Barb the snakeoil saleswoman delivered herself of this gem on November 21, 2008:

“Our recent presidential election clearly reflects the evolutionary shift that we have been talking about and sensing. Many of us appreciate that President Elect Obama is already a universal person, transcending race, and striving for a world that works for everyone. This could not have happened if there was not a rise in consciousness in the United States and throughout the world. The 33% of “cultural creatives” that Paul Ray speaks of are acting now, making this the time for our greater connectivity and cocreativity.

This Thanksgiving, as we continue to move forward in our evolutionary transformation, let us give thanks together for being alive at this precise moment of moments. It is my prayer that enough of us will join together in this season of thanksgiving to continue to support the evolution of America that is now underway.”

    Two observations:

    1. The powers that be at LCWR obviously have long ago surrendered any belief in what the Catholic Church teaches for Leftism with an incomprehensible New Age wrapper.

    2. They are too dumb to see an obvious charlatan when they come across one.

  • Does that “evolution” talk have anything to do “Social Darwinism”?

And, isn’t “Social Darwinism” one of them liberal swear words?

In the sense that the LCWR is a small, heretical cliche nearing extinction, Rome likely is overreacting.

This morning’s suggested reading: St. Paul, “Romans.”

The Saint writes about wrong-headed people who do not worship The God of creation but idolize the creation of God.

  • I didn’t think anyone did Teilhard anymore. I know the fear was always that his stuff wasn’t sufficiently grounded in othrodoxy. But I’m sure this lecture would resolve any lingering wariness.

  • I too had heard that Teilhard was frowned on for being doctrinaly unsound. (I tried to read a bit of his stuff at one point, being interested in evolution-related issues, and honestly found him fairly unreadable.) That said, the new-age transhumanist stuff that this speaker has going on is very much of the now, now something she got from Tielhard.

  • This stuff from the keynote speaker’s website makes me think of, I don’t know, maybe Battlestar Gallactica kind of stuff. This stuff is choice material for a TV mini-series like that. OH MY GOODNESS!

  • Commander Adama captaining the Galactica would hopefully know better than to give credence to freaks like this. The gnostic heretics should simply be publicly excommunicated and the LCWR handed over to orthodox women religious. They aren’t going to repent. They are simply too full of themselves. PS, why don’t they just go to Bishopress Schori in the ECUSA (or TEC as it’s otherwise known) where they belong?

  • Paul, you’re absolutely right ~ Commander Adama wouldn’t abide with this garbage. I agree they should just be excommunicated, those who will willingly agree and adhere to this kind of stuff. EVERYONE within that group should be asked to assent or not to the truths of our Faith; then be done with it. You’re in or you’re out. They’ve been given YEARS of leeway apparently. Enough is enough, with these supposed nuns as well as heretic priests and bishops.

  • Are you sure that Oprah didn’t write this?

  • I think that we all need to take it on ourselves during this time of the Vatican looking into the “sisters” that we all not only PRAY but do MAJOR PENANCE for them! It’s God’s timing to uproot the weeds growing in his “transformative” garden!

  • I dunno. I’ve sat in auditoriums where speakers babbled nonsense. I wouldn’t want to judge the individuals who attended these conferences. You go to a conference for the expressed purpose of meeting people and drinking wine in the mid-afternoon, not to listen to speakers. I do think that the schedulers of this stuff shouldn’t be allowed to schedule any more conferences, though.

  • When one attends Mass and the priest gives a homily on “our mother, God” they need to be corrected, now, not later. By the way, Gaia is goddess earth and people are considered parasites on the skin of mother earth. In another post unborn babies are considered parasites. LCWR are parasites on the faith of the people, whom they lord it over. I am embarrassed for them.

  • Hey, if my religious community had the LCRW’s median age, I’d be hoping to transcend my animal self and live for 600 years as well.

  • Pinky,

I’ve sat in auditoriums where speakers babbled nonsense. I wouldn’t want to judge the individuals who attended these conferences. You go to a conference for the expressed purpose of meeting people and drinking wine in the mid-afternoon, not to listen to speakers. I do think that the schedulers of this stuff shouldn’t be allowed to schedule any more conferences, though.

I think there’s a bit more of an expectation that the annual conferences of a conference of the heads of Catholic religious orders would actually be substantive, but I would not be at all surprised if many who are members of the LCWR don’t buy into any of this silliness — it’s just that their orders have belonged to the LCWR since it was founded 60 years ago, and they don’t have the time and energy to kick out those who make of hobby of running the thing.

Hopefully with the bishops the CDF asked to keep an eye on things now being in charge of supervising publications and speakers, there won’t be any more of this silliness.

  • The Vatican is not over reacting. Given that it has take the Vatican 30 years to act I think it is safe to say that the Vatican has greatly under-acted.

It is truly sad to see how far these nuns have drifted into the New Age heresies. Satan never sleeps! Personally I would require them to either recant in public, renew their vows to God and Church, and move back into actual religious life or I would show them the door.

  • “I dunno. I’ve sat in auditoriums where speakers babbled nonsense.”

I was in a Diaconate program where the faculty babbled this nonsense. They gave us books to read that were similar nonsense.

These people know what they are doing. And its not God’s work.

  • The smoke of Satan. I was thinking this morning after Mass, and I had been once lost in the folly of drug induced mysticism and eastern religion, that the smoke of Satan is in that Gnostic pride which makes us think we are among the “chosen” with special more highly evolved knowledge, remember Genesis”you shall be as god”. I believe it is much better for us to consider ourselves as blind, stupid and in need of God’s mercy and His grace to show us His way or we may be tempted to, as Jesus said, to follow other shepherds. As for those in LCWR who are deluded, let’s pray for them as I was once lost, stupid and blind too.

Is The USCCB Responsible for ObamaCare?

Friday, July 16, AD 2010

The American Life League (ALL) is making a strong case of placing most of the blame for passage of ObamaCare squarely on the shoulders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

What the ALL is alleging is that the USCCB was very desperate to push for universal health coverage that they compromised on some key principles.  One of which was that of abortion where instead of fighting against abortion they decided to stick their heads in the ground and use “abortion neutral” language.

  • It was imprudent for the USCCB to advocate for universal health care. While it is important and appropriate for the USCCB to explain the moral rules of engagement regarding access to health care, how a society can best satisfy those moral imperatives is outside its competency. Its opinions are no more or less instructive or insightful than mine, yours, etc. One of the most important moral rules of engagement regarding health care is that abortion is unacceptable.

  • I agree with Mike, but this is BS. The bishops (who certainly favor HC reform of some sort and in many or most cases prefer a government based system) were one of the loudest and most influential voices against abortion and the lack of conscience provisions. If it weren’t for them and other pro-life orgs like NRTL Obamacare would have steamrolled through with generous abortion provisions. In large part it was their influence with “pro-life” Dems that resulted in making the matter an obstacle to be overcome by Dem leadership and gaining what little protections there are.

  • There = their. Illiterate or something.

  • RL,

Got it fixed for you buddy.

Cardinal George personally telephoned pro-life GOPers to push for the pro-life amendment when it was in the House.

He didn’t do any such thing when Bart Stupak and his Benedict Arnold’s reversed course and put the death sentence on innocent unborn children.

  • I’m with RL. The USCCB was one of the loudest opponents of ObamaCare. To say that they are somehow responsible for it passing is bizarre.

  • Thanks Tito.

The bishops spoke to anyone and everyone who would listen. They made it clear to Stupak too. The bishops were rightfully disappointed in the “pro-life” Dems that changed their vote, and outraged at the shenanigans and betrayal of the CHA. I use the owrd outraged because that is pretty much what it would take for them to speak so disapprovingly publicly.

  • Why is it that anyone continues to think that our bishops are men of honor? Which of them would accept martyrdom in support of Church? Why was it necessary for the Vatican to issue rules about the protection of children?

Blind mouths, as Milton called them.

Blind mouths! that scarce themselves know how to hold
A sheep-hook, or have learn’d aught else the least That to the faithful herdman’s art belongs!
    What recks it them? What need they? They are sped;
And when they list, their lean and flashy songs
Grate on their scrannel pipes of wretched straw:
The hungry sheep look up, and are not fed,
But swoln with wind and the rank mist they draw
Rot inwardly, and foul contagion spread:
Besides what the grim wolf with privy paw
Daily devours apace, and nothing said:

  • Gabriel,
I think you paint with an exceedingly broad and uncharitable brush. And to answer your insulting rhetorical question, I bet quite a few would accept martyrdom if it came to that — but like STM have no interest in initiating or accelerating the process.

  • Politics are a problem for the USCCB. There are many so called “Catholics” who continue their support of todays culture and relativisms in Congress. The only fault of these Bishops , for most of them , is their inability in their teaching of the Church’s tenets to really enforced these teachings on those politicians after meetings and consultations with these so called “catholics” who continue to support the culture of death. A good example is the record of Nancy Pelosi and yet the extreme measure of excomunication is not used. These leaves many of the laity to wonder why they also can not pick and choose what tenets they may or may not follow, or disagree with, or why if these politicians are are able to cotinue their ” standing ” in the Church why then can’t they.

  • Mike Petrik said Friday, July 16, 2010 A.D.

My point is quite simple: our bishops are failing in their duty. Compare ours with the bishops in China, Vietnam, Africa.
A.N.Whitehead described religion in our time as “decoration for comfortable lives”. Our bishops are afraid; they congregate behind the chancery walls and the bureaucratic pomposities of the USCCB.

Consider but the inanities of Fr. McBrien, published in so many diocesan papers. Uncharitable is permitting his misleading notions to be published under episcopal authority. {One among many examples: Fr. McBrien believes that ensoulment of the fetus happens three months after conception – which is to say that an abortion before the 3rd month is not murder].

Bishops like hanging around politicians. They are not unlike the Arian bishops who delighted in being received at the court in Constantinople. Plus ca change…
