One aspect of Leftist politics that has been true since the French Revolution is the tendency of the Left to shatter into hostile factions. During the French Revolution we have the Jacobins and the Girondins. The reign of Stalin in the Soviet Union featured a campaign of extermination waged against, almost entirely, Trotskyites wreckers. In the Spanish Civil War, Anarchists and Communists fought a civil war within the Civil War. Intersectionality is the attempt to paper over this natural tendency and present a unified front based on shared identity politics grievances. Short term it is possible to do this, long term such “let’s click our heels and pretend” politics always crashes and burns.
