PopeWatch: Like Pigs

PopeWatch confesses that this Pope often is just baffling:

It is not Christian to walk with one’s gaze lowered like pigs, Pope Francis said at his weekly general audience Wednesday.

Go here to read the rest.  In many ways PopeWatch thinks that this Pope is among the strangest popes that the Church has had at her helm.

After years of defending this Pope, I’ve come to the realisation that I don’t understand him or his homilies.

Sometimes it’s ok to look down. Particularly if you would rather avoid other around you and conflict with them. That does not make me a pig. It means I don’t want to attract conflict or trouble. Eye contact evokes many emotions.

If we all held our heads high then we’ll all look as stupid as an ostrich.

Pope Francis could not be more confusing if he tried.

Baffling? Three bricks shy of a load.

Of course, looking down might signify humility….

There’s a mind set with some, should I say some Jesuits, to say something confusing as if it were profound.

Oh, he’s not confusing. Once you realize the pontiff doesn’t like his flock all that much, he makes perfect sense.

He’s exactly like one of those fathers who likes everyone else’s kids, but not his own. The College gave us a narrow-minded, parochial progressive bully whose thinking ossified in 1976.

No way out but through.

“It is not Christian to walk with one’s gaze directed downward — as swine do: they always go along in this way — without lifting one’s eyes to the horizon. As if our entire journey terminated here, in the span of a few metres travelled; as if our life had no goal and no mooring, and we were compelled to wander endlessly, without any reason for our many toils. This is not Christian.”

This isn’t baffling.

Pope Francis is referring (diatribing) to orthodox Catholics–those who believe what Christ said and act on it. A lowered gaze is the smart and holy way to walk–the way Monks walk. We are instructed to have custody of the eyes to avoid temptation and needless curiosities. It is also just plain smart to watch your step.

Walking with one’s gaze lowered to one’s Smartphone is not a good idea-as many a Youtube “fail” video will attest. I would like think the Pope had that in mind.
.
I agree with the Pope there is as abundance of bad news in the press, especially out of Venezuela, but that is a topic for later.

The herd of 4000 swine ran off the cliff and drowned themselves in the sea rather than be possessed by Legion. Pretty smart for dumb pigs.
