I will be doing a write up on the speech tomorrow.  I would like commenters and contributors to react to the speech in the comboxes as it is delivered tonight.

Just as an aside, we have the US beloved clown and Vice-President down here on the fringes of civilisation, in a goodwill visit, and to shore up NZ support for the US presence in the Pacific now that China is trying to steal the Spratly Islands and various other atols in the South China sea.
He has offered a non-nuclear powered warship to come to attend the 75th.anniversary of the Royal NZ Navy celebrations in a month or two time. You may recall the anti-nuclear stance that the NZ government of the time took in the 1980’s which prevented the USA visiting our shores due to their “neither confirm nor deny” nuclear policy. This embargo has been been lifted by degrees over the past decade or so and has now been discarded.
All good.

Nate, do you get Heroes & Icons Network? You probably wouldn’t know it if you do. Mostly classic westerns and Hill Street Blues. I get them on broadcast. Anyway, they just got the rights to all five Star Trek shows, and they’re starting them on their schedule this Sunday.

This Sunday, all five pilot episodes of Star Trek will be shown. Imagine, five chances to hear the exact same speech: “You aliens may be smarter than we are, but humans have a need to explore and learn and overcome our faults”.

Don the Kiwi, the reason the NZ policy has been ‘discarded’ is due to the retirement of large portions of the U.S. nuclear arsenal in the last 20 years. The U.S. still refuses to “confirm or deny”, but a close reading of the list of dismantled warhead types effectively constitutes a denial that U.S. surface combatants carry such weapons any longer.

I watched PBS coverage of the Trump acceptance speech. – Judy Woodruff (Hillary donor) and Gwen Ifil Mark Shields David Brooks– It was like a self flagellation for me.
