PopeWatch: The Pope and the Donald

PopeWatch2-199x300-199x300

If Donald Trump is elected president a TrumpWatch will be joining PopeWatch.  Superficially these men, who obviously have little use for each other, have little in common.  Dig a bit deeper, however, and certain similarities emerge.

1.  Vituperation-Both men have endless names for those who rouse their ire, although the Pope never descends to the vulgarity of Trump.

2.  Facts-Both view facts not as stubborn things, but infinitely malleable tools.

3.  Conspiracy Theories-Both are given to believing and broadcasting conspiracy theories.

4.  Conservatives-Neither of them are conservatives.

5.  Stream-of-consciousness-Both of them make stream-of-consciousness speeches when they depart from texts.

6.  Marriage-Both of them believe in a certain flexibility in interpreting Christ’s command that marriage is for life.

7.  Populists-Both are populists.  How blessed are the little guy and gal having such champions looking out for their interests!

8.  Outsiders-Both cultivate outsider images while being consummate insiders.

9.  Republicans-Neither are Republicans.

10. Exegesis-Both have handed down unique interpretations of Bible passages.

They are so far apart that they end up just like each other.
.
But my disgust and disdain is far greater for the occupier of the See of St Peter because he is expected and required to know better. One might forgive a pagan playboy gambler who does not know any better.

Both seem to have an endless supply of egotism. While Trump’s is the more
straightforward brand, slapping his name or portrait on anything within reach,
this Holy Father’s sort of egotism is the kind that makes a display of his humility.
.
Both men are deeply, madly in love with the sound of their own ramblings,
and never hesitate to find a camera or a microphone to get in front of.

Number three is the weirdest in both men with the Pope seeing arms dealers behind the Brussels attack when home made bombs were used along with small arms and Trump saying that Mexico was deliberately sending us their rapists….when I doubt that few in Mexican government employment are working that hard at anything let alone researching and fine tuning fence jumper groups.
I’ll bet both men are empty hell people if allowed to give their uncensored expanded view of that topic….the Pope via Fr. Karl Rahner and Von Balthasar ( see May 4 general audience….words on both sides of this fence ) …and Trump via presumption which resembles hope deceptively. It’s not that I want millions in hell but throughout history with millions of pirates etc. being killed in the act of piracy, evil intending armies ( think Nanking ) ditto and criminals getting killed while trying to kill law officers, I think the odds for some yea many humans being in hell are overwhelming. Now if the Pope were to counter that God could save each at their last second of life between heart death and brain death, I would ask him to explain Christ’s words in Luke 13:24… ” strive to enter by the narrow way…many will seek to enter but will not be able to.”

The best short, succinct analysis as to why Cruz lost and Trump won I have found is this one by Fred Barnes of the The Weekly Standard:

Both think they are superior and have more insight than the rest of us.

Both don’t “get” their own religion
pope is a catholic dreaming of “ a new European humanism”
trump is a presbyterian (reform theology depraved) who has no need for forgiveness
