Political Weasel of the Year

Hands down, the holder of the title of political weasel of the year has to be Governor Charlie Crist of Florida, a former Republican, who left the party when it became obvious that he would lose the Republican Senate nomination to pro-life stalwart Marco Rubio.

When Crist began his career he was a pro-abort.  Then he became a pro-lifer and was elected Governor as a pro-lifer.  Now that he is running as an independent for the Senate against pro-lifer Rubio, Crist is preparing to go back to being a pro-abort and has scrubbed his campaign web-site of all mention of being pro-life:

Governor Crist of Florida, who has been vacillating for the past month over whether or not he will veto a recently-passed pro-life law, removed the pro-life/pro-family issue page of his U.S. Senate campaign website on Monday – an indication that he may be considering vetoing the bill after all.

In addition, at a morning news briefing today Crist said that he would act “sooner rather than later” on the bill and that he has serious problems with it. He added that he could not think of anything he likes about the legislation.

HB 1143 was passed by the state legislature on April 30.  It would require that mothers be offered the opportunity to view an ultrasound of their infant before an abortion is performed, an offer that the mothers would be permitted to refuse.  The legislation contains exemptions in cases of rape, incest, and situations where the life of the mother is at risk.

It would also prevent health insurance plans from covering abortion if the plan in question is subsidized by the state or federal government.

Crist, who has a mixed record on abortion, had previously said that although he considers himself “pro-life,” he may veto the bill out of a reluctance to “impose my will on others.”  But his current actions are the clearest yet indicating that he will likely veto the bill.

Crist  is running for the U.S. Senate as an independent after leaving the Republican party.

Republican Marc Rubio, who is competing for the same Senate seat as Crist, pointed out on his website that Crist removed the pro-life section of his website and accused him of “flip-flipping again.”  Rubio has the backing of pro-life groups.

Go here to read what his website said before this section was swept down the memory hole.  Crist has flip-flopped on many issues since deciding to run for election as an independent, in a mad rush to the Left to attract liberal voters, although Leftists seem to be cool to his sudden “conversion” on a host of issues.

Crist of course represents just why many people despise politicians:  a belief that most of them truly do not believe anything, and would literally say or do anything to gain and keep power.  As for myself, one of my favorite poems says it all so well:

The Vicar of Bray

In good King Charles’s golden days,
When Loyalty no harm meant;
A Furious High-Church man I was,
And so I gain’d Preferment.
Unto my Flock I daily Preach’d,
Kings are by God appointed,
And Damn’d are those who dare resist,
Or touch the Lord’s Anointed.

And this is law, I will maintain
Unto my Dying Day, Sir.
That whatsoever King may reign,
I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir!

When Royal James possest the crown,
And popery grew in fashion;
The Penal Law I houted down,
And read the Declaration:
The Church of Rome I found would fit
Full well my Constitution,
And I had been a Jesuit,
But for the Revolution.
And this is Law, &c.

When William our Deliverer came,
To heal the Nation’s Grievance,
I turn’d the Cat in Pan again,
And swore to him Allegiance:
Old Principles I did revoke,
Set conscience at a distance,
Passive Obedience is a Joke,
A Jest is non-resistance.
And this is Law, &c.

When Royal Ann became our Queen,
Then Church of England’s Glory,
Another face of things was seen,
And I became a Tory:
Occasional Conformists base
I Damn’d, and Moderation,
And thought the Church in danger was,
From such Prevarication.
And this is Law, &c.

When George in Pudding time came o’er,
And Moderate Men looked big, Sir,
My Principles I chang’d once more,
And so became a Whig, Sir.
And thus Preferment I procur’d,
From our Faith’s great Defender,
And almost every day abjur’d
The Pope, and the Pretender.
And this is Law, &c.

The Illustrious House of Hannover,
And Protestant succession,
To these I lustily will swear,
Whilst they can keep possession:
For in my Faith, and Loyalty,
I never once will faulter,
But George, my lawful king shall be,
Except the Times shou’d alter.
And this is Law, &c.

This may be the nail in Crist’s coffin that ends his political career. I hope so. I can’t stand those compromisers who compromise their values and are political opportunists.

It would also prevent health insurance plans from covering abortion if the plan in question is subsidized by the state or federal government.

This is where the Catholic pro-aborts come out once more to lie to our faces when telling us the health care bill doesn’t fund abortion.

No need to insult weasels, Don. They are a higher order of vermin.

Don’t count on it… the year isn’t even half over and nobody holds that title for very long (see: Bart Stupak, Ben Nelson)
