Civilization V Coming Fall 2010
Sid Meier’s Civilization V is finally going to be released this Fall of 2010. This famous turn-based conquer the world strategy PC game has gotten me hooked ever since I first encountered it in college. In fact, it is the only game I play.
Civilization V is the sequel to Civilization IV, but like its predecessors, it will probably stand alone on its own.
What’s new in this edition?
Five things that I can share with you are:
1. The traditional square tiles have been replaced by hexagonal tiles.
2. Diplomacy in the game has been ramped up to the point where peace is actually a viable option.
3. “Stacks of doom” are a thing of the past with the new rule of only allowing one unit per hexagon.
4. Cities have gained significantly in terms of defense. Now the total ‘hit points’ of a city is determined by the city’s population, hence moving combat away from cities and into adjoining hexagons for better defenses.
5. Oh, and the ‘advisers’ return in this installment of Civilization.

Blogging is addictive enough. I generally keep my distance from computer games on account that, when I’ve played, I find them (perhaps too) engrossing and a time-sucker. The last game I played was Civilization 3.

Tito, my wife and I have been playing Civilization since our copy of Civilization I came on Christmas Eve 1991. My wife won a Civilization tournament years ago at GenCon. Clan McClarey is looking forward to Civ V with great anticipation!
Christopher has of course a valid point, one which strategy game junkies like myself ignore.
My 2 cents, that promo was History Channel-level bad.

Though the game itself I wait with great anticipation!
I haven’t really liked Civilization since the very first one (I secretly installed it in my school’s computer lab and played it every day

This one looks promising. I think hexes generally work out better than squares.
Just hope its not all buggy and weird like some earlier versions (I tuned out after civ III).
Another great supplement, I really couldn’t have stated it better myself.
Amazing, that brings back some memories. The video actually uses a series of quotes about Courage, Faith and Hope which seems suspiciously familiar to the Duty Honor Country speech by Gen. McArthur at West Point that all new cadets must memorize. Anyone know if they are somehow related?
On a separate note, Gencon was mentioned above and I remember back in high school my mom finally letting me get to go, since it wasn’t that far (I lived in the suburbs of Chicago at the time) and we got to meet Gary Gygax. I was a complete Civilization addict as well, although it may be two more decades before I ever get back into it with our rapidly expanding clan.
