I can't believe that out of all the liberal yahoos in Hollywood, Chris Rock was the only one wise enough to see Polanski for what he is: a vile rapist of 13-year old children!

Watching him rip Polanski for his vehemently foul crime is priceless.

Allen's support of Polanski is no surprise. And I already knew that Whoopi Goldberg is a morally confused and not-very-bright person. Other Hollywood supporters, I would imagine, have their own skeltons in the closet. This is the industry, remember, that invented the term "casting couch."

The shocker to me is that people like Kouchner and Anne Applebaum are Polanski defenders. Kouchner? The founder of Doctors Without Borders? And Applebaum? She wrote a great book, "Gulag," a history of the terrible horrors of the Soviet prison system. Applebaum movingly chronicled the torments and abuses the powerful inflicted upon the powerless in the old USSR. So when I read her dismissal of the pain suffered by a powerless 13 year old girl at the hands of a powerful Hollywood director, my heart sank.

My guess is that Applebaum and Kouchner know Polanski and admire his work. Kouchner is a member of the Parisian elite and Applebaum's husband is a Polish government official, so both move in rarified circles. They've met him at fancy dinner parties, found him charming and personable (many sociopaths are) and are blinded by that fact. Both should know better.

Thank you for sharing that. I'm also aware of certain government ministers finally coming around to denounce the pathetic defense of Polanski.

The reactions of the public in France are the same as in the US. Comments in the blog section are expressing indignation at the position of certain Government ministers. And there is an open letter in Le Monde to Messrs Mitterrand and Kouchner by a man who did the same thing as Polanski 20 years ago, but paid his debt in full. He came to understand the gravity of his act, the hurt that such actions can do to young and vulnerable girls, and did not repeat the offence. The letter can be read at http://www.lemonde.fr/opinions/chronique/2009/09/30/lettre-ouverte-a-monsieur-kouchner-et-monsieur-mitterrrand_1247376_3232.html

That is a great contrast between Roman Polanski and Pope John Paul II who both suffered under the same brutal regimes, yet they went on divergent paths.
