I just got back from lunch with Mr. Read, who is here in Seattle doing various readings from Death of a Pope. What a lovely man! Very modest and self-effacing and kind. It was a pleasure to get to meet him!

I will have to check this new novel out. I have to second Darwin's opinion of "Pierced By A Sword," which I picked up for 25 cents at a garage sale a few years ago. It contains some intriguing ideas (such as, the notion of a supernatural "warning" in which everyone instantly sees all the consequences of every sin they ever committed and every good act they ever did) but the part that would really be laughable today revolves around Notre Dame becoming the center of the "true" church in America, where the real Pope ends up taking refuge from his enemies :)

I love Mr. Read's work. He is a completely orthodox Catholic, a great writer and a superb scholar. His Hell and Other Destinations are a collection of his essays about the Faith.

His The Templars is a good overview of that Order during the Crusades and debunks all the rubbish that has been written about them over the centuries. The antidote to Dan Brown!
