Having been quite familiar with the life of the saintly Fr. Whelan for many years (my great grandfather, Sgt. Henry Murray, having been an Andersonville survivor) I echo Elaine Krewson's suggestion that he be nominated for sainthood. And the Savannah Diocese & the Knights of Columbus should be the ones to propose it.

In some ways he could be thought of as the Father Kolbe of the Civil War; though he was not himself a prisoner and was not executed like Father Kolbe, he did give his life for the other prisoners in an indirect way (by exposing himself to disease for their sake). Has anyone in the Diocese of Savannah considered proposing Father Whelan for sainthood?
