Sebelius Confirmation Hearing
Today, Tuesday, April 1, 2009, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius appeared before the Senate HELP Cmte. for the first of two hearings to be confirmed as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Sebelius, as we all know, is a pro-choice Catholic who’s position on sanctity of life issues is troublesome given her future task, if confirmed, to lead in a health care reform overhaul that is expected to be introduced and brought to a congressional vote at the end of this year.
If you’re interested in watching her confirmation hearing, go here (it is 2 hours and 28 minutes.)
I have included other short snippets of the Confirmation hearing that may be of interest.
Sebelius’ closing statements and committment to health reform:
Sebelius’ skirmish with Sen. John McCain:
Sebelius answers questions about the Hyde Amendment, RU-486, and Bush’s midnight HHS conscience clause and prenatal care as it relates to infant mortality in the U.S.:
If the commtitee approves Sebelius, she will have a second hearing in the form of a Senate vote to confirm her, which will surely be in her favor

Of course she just discovered the $7000 in back taxes and promises to make good forthwith. Now a Cabinet Club member in good standing. Maybe Tiller The Killer will be invited to her nomination party now that he’s walked on technicalities. One big happy family.
She was the 6th nominee to have that problem. Who’s vetting these people?
Usually a three person team is in charge of vetting. I’d say it was either the team of Moe, Larry and Curly or Groucho, Harpo and Chico.
I thought it was the darling two Obama daughters and a secret service agent that’s watching them.
She’s incredibly ambiguous (in the last video there) about the issues of abortion-funding, abortifacent pills, conscience clauses, and such matters. I’m not surprise, and we can easily speculate as to why, but it is bothersome how they get away with such easy answers.
If I were asking the questions, I would want a clear, unequivocal ‘yes’ or ‘no.’
If I don’t pay my taxes this year, can I be in the cabinet too? Seems to be the key requirement.
Oh, the irony here: HHS Secretary was allegedly one of the jobs Illinois Governor Blagojevich thought he could wangle in return for appointing someone of Obama’s choice to his old Senate seat.
If Blago had been chosen and survived the nomination process (which only someone as deranged as he could even think possible), he would have been just as bad on life issues and conscience clauses as Sebelius — or Obama’s first choice, Tom Daschle — but at least he wouldn’t have been Catholic. (He’s Serbian Orthodox.)
Also, during his impeachment trial, he referred to Sebelius (not by name, but simply as “the governor of Kansas”) as one of several politicans he thought should ALSO be impeached if — as the case against him charged — attempting to import prescription drugs without federal approval was illegal, since she had the same idea. That’s one of the few things he said in that speech that I actually kind of agreed with
