Benedict XVI vs. Nancy Pelosi

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, renowned (by herself) as an “ardent, practicing Catholic” will be meeting with Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican tomorrow. Given her latest blunder during a press conference, stating that “500 million Americans lose their job every month” (talking about why the economic stimulus plan had to pass) despite the fact that there are only 300 Americans living in this country and less than 150 million of them working, if that, one might suspect that she’ll inform the Holy Father that “500 million clergyman will lose their jobs if abortion is not promoted worldwide.”
I have no doubt in my mind that the Holy Father is going to bring up abortion, embryonic stem cell research, contraception, gay marriage and attempt to correct her.
Thoughts? Will the Speaker of the House be formally excommunicated?

Make no mistake. Fancy Nancy is now the real President of these United States. The Standard of Hope and Change is merely her loyal attendant in activating the Porkapalooza Bill. Sometimes her rhetoric gets flummoxed as in the 500 million American comment. But this lady does not play. Learned politics at the knee of daddy, ex-Baltimore mayor. Helped with the family business when ward leaders or other dependants came a-calliing. Those pothead hippies in San Fran had no idea who they were dealing with in making her a perennial Congressperson- wipes out any and all rivals. No public clashes with La Hillary either- too busy on fact-finding missions. We know they would work together like Fido and Kitty. Anyway-
Methinks the Holy Father may go easy on her. But with some warning about change your ways and repent of abortion advocacy. Which she may forget about on the transatlantic flight back to D.C. Also make no mistake. The future of the Democratic Party is very much in her hands. Whether she likes it or not. If Porkapalooza does not heal the sick, raise the dead, make the little girls go out of their heads- to paraphrase Johnny Rivers’ “The Seventh Son” from GoGo 60s- it all falls on her well-coiffed head. Might be the way a control freak wants it.
Will she be excommunicated? No.
Excommunication? Not hardly. Anyone know if she’s ever gotten around to meeting with Abp. Niederauer?
I believe she lacks the necessary mens rea to be excommunicated. In her case “she knows not what she does” might be a valid defense based on her dopey utterances regarding matters sacred and profane.
it will all be very cordial…head of state meeting prominent foreign politician. we have seen it more times than we can count.
My hunch is that Benedict believes the responsibility should be on Pelosi’s bishop to correct — and as circumstances warrant — discipline her.
Great. Let’s take up a collection to send Ms. Pelosi’s bishop to the audience with her.
Technically, one excommunicates oneself; the Church’s announcement of that event (if made public) is merely “the paperwork.”
B-16 will be very cordial and engaging.
I too am certain that Benedict will not wag a finger at this dessicated old sorceress; that’s for her bishop to do. It will be a typical state meeting, as protocol dictates. That being said, Benedict certainly could have made a potent statement by simply finding something better to do that day (some “pressing” issue) and by not giving her the satisfaction of a photo-op at all.
He should have come up with an excuse and snubbed her, and there’s no one on earth who can tell me that Benedict could never, ever do such a thing as refuse admittance to this harebrained Speaker of the House. It would have been perfect and easily accomplished.
Now, the beldam has her photo-op. Benedict is a man of exquisite intellect, and I applaud his brains, but he learned not a thing from the deft way his predecessor took the mass-media in his hands and bent them to his iron will. Who knows. Benedict is not a man to be doctrinally crossed–certainly not by this woman. He may give her a piece of his mind and take a wait and see approach. One thing is certain: his outfit will be much prettier than hers at the private audience. Benedict will ~not~ be outdone by Fancy Nancy.
For what it’s worth, I hope her designer duds are spattered with the spittle of a thousand anathemas.
Hey–one can dream.
My bet is that he’ll give her a warning. The content of their private conversation will not be revealed, and she and the liberal press will win this round. I think she’ll get one more strike.
I still think Abp Burke should be in attendance. Just for funsies.
And all the people who made predictions have been wrong. Not only has the contents of the meeting been revealed, Benedict didn’t excommunicate her, just reminded her that her duty as a Catholic official is to help preserve and protect life at all stages. Now, Benedict is bright enough to know he is not an American to know the way one is to do that (and he knows there is more than one way to do so, as well). He just stood by basic Catholic teaching. But I do find it interesting to see how people are already reacting as if it were a “stern” response. I don’t see anything stern about it. He didn’t even indicate any possible future action will be taken against her. He was just being as he should — a shepherd BEYOND the American politcal agenda.
Henry Karlson,
Benedict is bright enough to know he is not an American to know the way one is to do that
spin. You perhaps have forgotten the letter to bishops authored by then Cardinal Ratzinger instructing on the the “way to do that”, as well as the numerous instructions from the Holy See which have definitively stated that legal abortion is a grave violation of natural law and the duty of every Catholic in political life to eliminate.
Following the General Audience the Holy Father briefly greeted Mrs Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, together with her entourage.
His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church’s consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development.
This only a paraphrase, so we don’t know the precise language used, but this can only be considered a non-rebuke if one’s policies are not diametrically opposed to the notion. If Pelosi were a pro-abortion moderate rather than the radical she is, it could have been considered a mild correction.
So you consider ending abortion not a universal moral issue, but a “American political agenda”???
This was not done merely for the Pope’s health. It was a clear warning, rendered diplomatically but unmistakably. This was meant for her ears, there’s no question about it, and she will be watched in the future. Yes, this is a rebuke. A papal rebuke. Next stop: official excommunication if she publicly endorses anti-life policies or legislates to that effect. Benny threw the gauntlet down. Good for him.
“And all the people who made predictions have been wrong…Benedict didn’t excommunicate her.”
Actually, just as I (and others) predicted. And yes he did B-16 slap her.
