Updates below ?, Hans Küng accuses His Holiness of being “egomaniacal” (more below).
A dissident Catholic theologian from Germany is calling on the Pope to “resign”. Hermann Haering is the “theologian” in question who is asking for His Holiness’ resignation. Even the German Chancellor, Angela Merkell, has asked the Pope to strongly rebuke Williamson and distance himself from it–which he has already done though many in the secular world fail to recognize. What do they want, Richard Williamsons’ head on a stake?
We should always take what the mainstream media reports with a grain of salt. The mainstream media has more times than not, reported with a bias against the Catholic Church. With dissident Catholics such as Hermann Hearing, anything they say will be grasped upon quickly for a cheap shot against the Catholic Church. The smear campaign has begun in full throttle just as Fr. John Zuhlsdorf forewarned us about; Anti-Catholics and dissidents are coming out of the seeping cracks to take potshots at our Pope.
The calumny will not end until both dissident Catholics and those that hate the Church do the damage they want. Dissidents to halt the Reform of the Reform and those that hate the Church to harm Her enough to hobble Her mission–that is to spread God’s message of love.
Reportedly, the Vatican has been compiling a dossier of events that led to the insensitive remarks of Richard Williamson. In no way is the Vatican excusing his behavior. What is being heard and reported, by Andrea Tornielli of Il Giornale, is that the Vatican “minimizes neither the absurd words pronounced by Williamson, nor the gravity of their coincidence with the Day of Memory“.
What is of note is the possibility that there are those inside the Vatican that orchestrated the timing of Richard Williamsons’ remarks to coincide with the lifting of the excommunications for maximum possible damage to His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, continued efforts in striving for unity. Fr. John Zuhlsdorf and Rorate Cæli have complete translations and analysis on this possibility.
What can we do now as Catholics? We should pray for the Holy Father. Pray that he has strength and clarity of mind to resist the pressures lining up against him. Pray that he not feel too isolated or that he ought to start making odd gestures here and there just to satisfy those who are screaming at him.

Updated (2-3-2009 AD, 11:45pm CST): Dissident theologian Hans Küng takes a potshot at Papa Bene. Accusing His Holiness of (emphasis mine):
“…inflexible on questions of birth control and abortion, averse to any serious reforms, egomaniacal and without transparency in their administration, and restrictive in interpreting the freedoms and rights of the people.”
“…this Pope is primarily facing backward, inspired by the ideals of the medieval Church, skeptical about the Reformation and ambivalent about the rights and freedoms of the modern age.”
Dissident Catholic, Hans Küng, goes on and wishes “If only Obama were Pope…” Read the rest of Hans Küngs’ diatribe here.
